Sound guessing without the microphone

The listening quiz is a full game path for visitors who do not want to record. Use these notes to learn the rules and recover from a quiet or blocked clip.

Do I need permission?

No. The quiz plays reference audio and accepts answer buttons. It does not call getUserMedia, request a microphone or create a voice recording. You can use it on a shared device, before granting permission or when another app owns the input.

Can I replay a question?

Yes. Replay the mystery clip as often as you need, then choose the sound name. The four-question set is about careful listening and memory, not a hidden time penalty. A wrong answer shows the useful comparison so you can learn the catalog before trying voice imitation.

The sound is silent

Check media volume, unmute the tab and press Play yourself if the browser blocks autoplay. Retry the clip from a normal browser tab; embedded browsers may restrict audio. If the file remains unavailable, the issue is with playback rather than a missing microphone permission.

Where do the sounds come from?

The public quiz uses original studio clips shipped by Mimic Party. The names are playful descriptions, not claims that the project sampled a commercial song, film or operating system. The Audio credits page explains the original pack, fallback recipes and any separate open-audio pilot.

What can I play next?

After the quiz, choose Just Play for a three-sound voice set, Daily Streak for four shared sounds or an online room for friends. The microphone intro will explain the local scoring and the optional private replay boundary before a scored take starts.

The four questions in detail

Each question plays one reference clip and offers answer buttons. The answer list is intentionally small so you can compare close sounds instead of searching a long catalog. A correct answer moves the set forward; a wrong answer reveals the useful comparison and does not ask for a microphone.

Remember a clip by landmarks

Listen for a beginning, a repeated middle texture and the final release. Those landmarks are easier to recall than a vague label such as loud or strange. The Audio credits page names the pack and gives a player for the original references, so you can review what a description means.

Playback support

If a clip will not start, check the tab mute icon and device volume, then press the visible Play control. A network filter or an embedded browser can block a media request; retry in a normal tab before changing microphone settings. The quiz can be played with a keyboard when the answer buttons are visible.

No-microphone privacy

The listening quiz never calls the microphone and does not create a voice recording. It is useful for a child, a shared computer or a visitor who is still deciding whether to grant access. Optional measurement and advertising remain controlled by the site's privacy choice, separately from audio playback.

Answer buttons and keyboard use

The answer choices are regular controls, so you can move to them with Tab and activate one with Enter or Space. Read the label before choosing; the playful name is the answer, not an instruction to speak. If focus appears to disappear, press Tab once more or reload the page in a normal browser tab.

A clip can be familiar and still be wrong

The set includes sounds with related textures so listening for one landmark is not always enough. Replay the beginning and the release, then compare the answer names. The result is meant to teach the catalog, so a wrong answer is a useful explanation rather than a penalty for not using a microphone.

Network and cache recovery

A partial media response can leave a player that appears loaded but has no sound. Reload once, press the visible Play control and allow the file to finish buffering before choosing. If the same clip fails on a different network, note its question number for support instead of changing microphone permissions.

The quiz and the catalog

The quiz references the same original sound families shown in the sound library. The library gives a longer explanation, duration and audio preview, while the quiz keeps the answer set small. Moving between them lets a visitor understand a sound without creating an account or uploading an input.

A calm next step

After a few rounds, choose a mode that matches the device and group: Sound Memory for listening, Just Play for a short local take, Daily Streak for a repeatable routine or Online for friends. Read the mode guide first if you want to know when a microphone or room invitation will be involved.
